Cairo Arab League - Interior renovation
With Studio Nada Debs
The League of Arab States is a confederation of twenty-two Arab nations whose broad mission is to improve coordination among its members on matters of common interest. Designed by Egyptian architect Mahmoud Riad in 1955 the building has witnessed many renovations that resulted in a pastiche of styles.
This Intervention results in a fusion of past and present that generates a progressive Arab identity. Here, geometry is used to communicate messages of unity and development. A stretched diamond extracted from the existing wall cladding becomes the starting point. A star composed of this diamond marks the center where all participants gather, while its application on the ceiling and floor brings motion to the space.
